Fire. >Auokl\n - d, Friday Night. B-iiTcin's boat ding-house at Parnell this morning was extinguished before any serious damage was done.
The Cambridge School. It was stated at the Board of Education to-day that Mr W. S. Stewart, 8.A., would enter on his duties as headmaster of the Cambridge school on August Ist.
Stabbing Case. A man named Wellings was stabbed in tho Imperial Hotel last night, and another named John Brown was arrested on the charge.
Electoral. Mr Moss has deferred his address to the electors of Parnell until Wednesday next. Mr Buckland opens the campaign at Otahuhu on Monday. Mr Swanbou says he has no intention at present of contesting any seat at the i forthcoming ©tteral election. He says b/v 'iias got out of Parliament with a . pretty, clean ( certifz-ate, and thinks it ' perhaps better to leate well alone. Sir George Giey has declined the requisition frem OAristchurch Noith. Messrs Adam Porter and A. K. Taylor are likely to come out against Mr Tole for Eden. Mr Hamlin announces that if elected for Fran klhySouth he will support the Atkinson Ministry.
New Lawyers. At the sitting in chambers this morning, William Frank Buckland, James Frederick Haultain, Walter Dignan and Geprge'Arthur Gibbin were admitted and enrolled as barristers and solicitors of the court.
, , Tie English Mail. The mail sterner Australia having left San Francisco for Auckland via Honolulu on Saturday, 7th inst., she is expected to arrive here to-morrow, but she may possibly put in an appearance- during to--nicnt. " -
Death of Mr Tonks. My,Benj«,min Tqnks, Auckland, formerly Provincial Treasurer, died this morning
from syncope of the heart, aged 52. Mr Tonks had been in failing health for some time past. About a month ago he had an attack while attending service at St. Mark's Church, Remuera, but though weak and ill lie did not take to bed until five or six days ago. '1 he dangerous nature of his malady was heightened by a disinclination to take food, and he gradually sank till death terminated his sufferings this morning. Dr. Haincs attended him throughout his illness.
Drowning Accident. Information has been recehed to the effect that an elderly man named John Wilson was drowned at Paeroa last night while endeavouring to get aboard the steamer Te Aroha. The body was found a few minutes after the accident, but life was extinct. Deceased was fonneily a publican at the Thames, but has been for sonif years a resident in the Ohinelnuri distiict.
