WELLINGTON, Thursday. Mr Locke, M. H.R , has interviewed the Government in lefeience to the case of the widow of the Returning Ofriccr who was drowned in the Povcity Bay distiict, and obtained a promise that £100 will be given her out of the public funds.
Friday. The Governor has decided not to interfere with the death sentence passed on Edwards, the Ormcndville murdcicr. Parliament was dissolved by pioclamation at noon to-day. All am its were issued at 12 45, fixing elections for the 22tid July. Tlie vviitsaie made ictuiiiable by the 6th August, and Pailiament meetjj for the despatch of business on the 7th August. New Zealand War medals have been issued to Major Edwauls, Colonial Defence Force ; Trooper John Blown, Kai Iwi Cavaiiy ; and Piivatc Wainck, Wanganui Militia.
DUNEDIN, Thuisday. The fire in the Kaitangata coal mine lias now been overcome, and coal was again got from the workings yesterday The file has done little damage. Fiiday. A house and stables at Pme Hill, owned by Cornelius Banbury, ueic burned down yesteid.iy. They were insured in the New Zealand Ollice for £550. Mr Watkin, who addiessed a laige meeting at Mosgiel last night, announced himself a strong Oppositionist, and a follower of Sir Julius Vogel. He received a vote of thanks, but was told his address contained too much ot Vogel. In the Star contempt c.iso, Mr Stout appearing for plaintiffs and Mr Haggett for the paper, the latter put in answer an affidavit statiug that the declarations and defence weie published without comment, solely as news, and therefore could not prejudice any person reaping them, that if publication is contempt the paper had not knowledge thereof and disclaims) such intention. Mr Stout mentioned incidentally that proceedings would be taken agam&t the Press Association. Justice Williams reserved judgment.

BLENHEIM, Friday. A house owned tenanted by Mr Jas. Foster, an old resident, was burned down at one o'clock this morning.
