THE CAMBRIDGE DOMAIN BOARD AND MR W. L. C. WILLIAMS.
Oiui readeis will remember perusing Mr Williams' letter of complaint to the Colotiial Secretaiy re the alleged actiouof the Domain Bo \id in allowing the Town Beard to drain the surface watei of the town mt) the Lake, and theieby convciting the lake into a most nnsigutly cesspool. The letter was published simultaneously with the proceedings of the meeting of the board at which it was discussed. Mr Williams was then mildly rebuked for what was considered to be unneee'saiy interference and meddlesomeness on his pirt, and a reply was drawn up to the v olonial Secretary altogether repudiating Mr Williams' assertions, and expl lining the action of the board in this patticul.ir matter ftom start to finish. Mr Williams', however, continues to maintain his attitude against the board on the subject, asserting that the chairman in bringing the matter before his colleagues at the late meeting failed to point out to them that in addition to draining the bank of the Lake — to his mind a very necessary work — they were draining the water of tlie whole block fiom St. Andrew's Church round to the Wesleyan Church in Queen-street West, and that this water was more or less polluted. He does not blame the town board for availing itself of such a capital and inexpensive opportunity of having the upper portion of the town drained for it, but condemns the domain board for allowing itself to be duped into such a course, and ruining instead of preserving the public domain. Mr Williams has written the following letter to Mr Wells the chairman of the domain board in reply to the remarks passed at the last meeting of the board :—: —
Cambiidge, June 21, 1884. T. Wells, Esq., Chairman of Domain
Board. Dear Sir,— l duly read the account of your last board meeting re diainage into the Cambridge Lake. I beg to inform you that I consider your explanation or statement un&atisfactory inasmuch as it is misleading. You state that your board has no intention of permitting anything but rain water to bo conducted into the lake. It is this very rain water charged with drainage of an impure nature from a large position of a. inhabited part of the township of Cambridge, that I object to being conducted into the Lake. Had the board confined themselves as implied m your published statement to the drainage of the shoies of the lake, I should have had no fault to find, and I submit that want of funds to do otherwise is no excuse for destroying the purity of the water in the lake. I therefore beg to notify to you that I shall still further communicate with the Colonial Secretary with a view to prevent that drainage from being conducted into the lake. My view of the board's trust i& borne out by Mr Elliotts telegram, viz., that you received the property in trust to beautify and improve, and not to damage by making the Lake in an obnoxious pool. I am taking this action as a private citizen and not with the impression that I represent the Cambridge Public. In conclusion, I submit that it was your duty and not mine to have taken the opinion of the Cambridge Public before taking your present action.— I atn, &c. < W. L. C. WILLIABfS.
