POLITICAL GOSSIP. [BY TELEGRAPH.- OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
The Opposition Tactics. Wellington, Monday Night. Gkeat excitement prevailed heio in the morning when it became known that strenuous etfoits were being made to finally heal the dispute between Sir G. Giey and Mv Montgomery, and to form a united phalanx to foice the Mmistiy to resign instead of dissolving Parliament. The piocoss by which this was to be accomplished was understood to ba the 10fusal of supplies to enable the Government to go to the country. A largo body of the Opposition were stiongly m favour of this course, but towards the afternoon matters began to cool down, and at present (9.30 p.m.) the feeling seems to be more one of anxious expectancy as to the Governors decision than one of active propagandi&m in any paiticular direction. Nothing has yet been at rived at by his Excellency. 1, however, feel pretty cci tain that a dissolution will be the outcome.
Demeanour of MinistersSome of the Ministers take their defeat very iudly ; others, as Mr Bryco and Major Atkiuson, seem pretty much as they weie, very little dibconceited. Th*re is an inherent consciousness of power about these men which makes them fold their togas round them and die like .1 Roman emperor, with dignity. Mr Mitchelson seems to have lobt his temper, and taller in the wildest w.iy about eauying neaily the whole of the Auckland constituencies by his own personal influence. It has caused some amusement here.
Th 3 Trunk Railway. A statement has appeared which ha? publicly condemned to execration Me&sis George, Hairi^, Whitaker and several other 1 -. The New Zealand Times states in an inspired article that thccfntral route is to be the one recommended for the main trunk line. The Auckland people will haidly relish much inteiference in that quaiter.
The East Coast Election. Mr Locke has been returned for Ka'-fc Co.v<t. He a \ owed himself <m opponent of tlieGoveinniont on ceiUiu lnoasuicss befoie the poll took place.
