'<r' < UNPROVQKBI) ASSAULT. '?' Thomas Millingtoh Hill, a butcher, residing at Hamilton, was charged with on that morning, a'Maulling one Thomas Lynch by striking him in the face and kicking him. The informant stated that he was a contractor engaged in repairing the Royal Hotel, .Hamilton East. He had engaged a young man named Thomas Chapman who 9had been working for Hill, but the latter refused to give up Chapman's tools pending a settlement of account*. That morning informant went with Chapman and see , Hill with the object of guaranteeing the amount owing by Chapman. On reaching the door, Hill asked him what he wanted, »nd before witness could reply he recehed a blow in the face, and a kick. Had given no provocation whate\ei. Clinpnian gave corroborative evidence. Defendant stated that Chapman had borrowed money from Mrs Hill to buy tools with and wished to go to another job without paying the money back or working it out. Chapman had been treated as one of the family and had not shown any gratitude. He was soiry for btriking the informant but he was .\ man of si very c\.cit.ible temperament and was annoyed with Chapman. His Worship said there were other and better ways of settling differ- ■ ences than that adopted by the defendant. He considered the assault was an entirely unprovoked one, and inflicted a fine of 10s w'th 19sc<^ts ; m default sevon days imprisonment. The money w*a paid.
