The annual sitting of the Licensing Committee of the above district wag held at the court house, Cambridge, yesterday morning. Present: Messrs John Fisher (chairman), Gane, Reynolds, and Hughes. The only application befpre the bench was that of Matthew Delaney, Ohaupo Hotel, for the renewal of his publican's license. The applicant had in another application for an accommodation license, in lieu of his publican's license. The committee, after reading section 9 of the act, found that they had no power to grant the latter application, but granted the renewal of the publican's license. This was all the business.
Before rising from the bench, the Chairman (Mr Fisher) said he had heard with much regret tlio intention of the Government to dispense with the sen ices of Mr Chailes Chitty, clerk of the court, owing to retrenchment in the service On behalf oi the licensing bench, lie had to express not only his sincere regret but utter astonishment that the Justice Depaitment should ha\e thought proper to adopt any such com se towards an officer of Mr Chitty's standing, who had passed about twenty years of the best portion of his life in the serwee. If any movement were deemed necessaiy, such as remonstrating by public petition against such an unjust and inconsiderate course, the Pukekura licensing bench would only be too happy to afford any assistance in their powei .
