RESIDENT MAGISTRATES' COURT, CAMBRIDGE. Yesterday.— ( Before Mr H. W. Northcroft, R.M.) THE WAOTO LARCENY CASE.
Edwix Harris was brought brought forward, chained with the larceny of £20 from Hany Symonds, a half-caste, residing at Waotu, in March, 1 »S2. The pa - ticuiars of the case have ahcady been published. The circumstances were liid before the court by Constable Btetinau Mr Campbell, on behalf of the piisoner, admitted the charge. It was true he had cleared out with the money, as stated, but about twelve montbs ago he had collected the money, with the object of paying it back to Symonds, but was unfortun ite enough to be himself robbed of w hat he had saved. He had also been the \ ictim of a series of unfoi tnnate accidents during his residence in the bush, by one of which lie had his arm broken, and thus for some ti-ne was incapacitated from wo-y!i, and consequently unable to make a second eff»it to safe the money to give to Mr Symonds Const ible Brendan stated that the ac-rn-?ed had a family residing at Kiliikihi. His wife had been maintaining herself j and ohildi en since the accused Had left her. Accused had been in the lock-up since the 20th, by \\ hich ho had suffered cousiduab'e hardship. On being asked what ho got to say for himself, the accused said he had been 16 yeaia in the colony, and had never been pic\iously before the court on a like chaige. ile had only been before the court once in kis life, and that was at Te Awamutu, when he was fined £G for striking a man who Mould not pay him \\ hat he o < ed him. His Worship sentenced prisoner to two months' hard labour in Mount Eden Gaol.
