THE NORTH NEW ZEALAND FARMERS' CO-OPERATIVE ASSOCIATION.
Mr James Forrest writes to the Editor as follow-, : — In your last issue you 'late that 4400 bhaics in the North Now Zealand Cooperative Ahsoci.vtum had been applied for, wheieas. the number should ha^e been .015.) distributed as per li->t appended. And at our meeting telegrams came to hand informing our chairman that packets of applications for ->baies were on the lo.id, «md which could not reach us in time for our Tuesday's meeting. This was the reason for giving six days further grace. I should like to hear something from your able pen re the coming directorate. The wide field over which the movement lias spread should lead us to consider the claims of all parts of the province, and if twelve directors aie necessary, let five only be Waikato men and the balance from other districts. How would it do to suggest one director from every county ? But, whoever the director* may bo (although the success so far ha<- been great), I would say, Feel your way, and don't fi<*h for whales before your tackle is htrong enough. I\e the .share list, I feel certain that 3§oo moie (if we had them) could be placed in Waikato, but the pioviiiional directors have said, Let shareholders come without canvassing. I think it will be rather troublesome collecting shilling calls. Could you not point out that if shareholders would sign a small note to the bank where they have an account asking them to pay the calls as they became due, it would save a deal of writing and stamps ? The banks do this for the Freezing Company.
Or, 5,455 shares, divided amongst 427 shareholders.
[The error pointed out by Mr Forrest was * typographical one. We have no doubt the suggestions contained in our correspondent's letter will have due weight with the shareholders at the general meeting, though the wisdom of the proposal to spread the directorate all over the country may be doubted. So long as the power remains in the hands of the producer and consumer, it does not matter so much where the directors reside. The^interests of the whole body of farmers ought" to be identical. Respecting the difficulty of collecting shilling calls, we are of opinion that shareholders taking less than, say, five, should pay in full at the time of allotment. — En.]
