MIRACULOUS ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.
An old man named James Cummings had a remarkable escape from di owning m the Waikato iner at Hamilton last night. Cunimingh .mixed m Hamilton by the ballast tidin fioin Moninsulle about 7 o'clock, and misunderstanding the directions given him rogauling the thereabouts of .Deegan's boai ding house, turned in at the gate of the Lawn Tennis gnmnd, and unwittingly walked o\ ci the bank of the ri\ er. fortunately for him theie is home titree growing just at. the edgn of the watei, for had his b\vag not caught in the shiubs nothing could have saved the unfortunate man from a watery grave. As it was his feet were in the water. To attempt to return was, u ,elcss, as the bank at the spot is perpendicular ; he therefore shouted as loudly as he could for help. His cries were eventually heaid at Mr Bradley 's residence, on the opposite side of the river, and the Misbeb Bradley at once proceeded to inform the police. Seigeant McUorern and Constable Wild, assisted bv a few volunteers, immediately took stops to evtricato Cnmmings fioin his perilous position, and with the aid of ropes ho was hauled to the bank, and taken to (-{-Wynne's Hotel, where he was hospitably lcceived and housed for the night. Beyond the effects of three hour-,' o\nosuie in such a-n awkward place, Cummings has luckily sustained no injury.
