Serious Fire. Smyfche's saw-mills, at Waitekerei, have been bmneil down. The damages amount to £3000. At 240 in the morning Mr Smythe was aroused by one of the men or the left-hand side shouting "fire!" Looking out he saw the foreman on the roof of the engine house, and the mill on fire. Without putting on his clothes he rushed into the mill, but had to come back again, the smoke being so dense that he could neither see nor do anything. In a very few minutes the whole roof of the mill was in a blaze. About 50 hands mustered, and water was poured on the fire at the rate of 50 buckets per minute, a number of pipes all the while running a supply into a tub, into which the men dipped their buckets. Nothing could be done to save the mill, which was destroyed with all its contents, not e\ en the tools having been saved. The flames extended to the timber which sut rounded the building. The men worked all night trying to extinguish the fire, b.it it was not until 11 o'clock to-day that the) got it in check. It was still burning when Mr Smythe left at that hour. The engine-house premises were three years old, and cost over £2500. A policy of £300, in the Victoria office, is the only insuranc. Mr Smythe did not insure further, thinking himself perfectly safe. It is estimated that about 20,000 feet of timber, valued at £600 or £700, was consumed. Tne total loss over and above the insurance will be £2500, while some of the workmen lost their tools.
