WOODLANDS ANNUAL SPORTS.

The annual sports held at Woodlands, the Waikato Lind Association's principal station, came off yesterday. The sports, winch have now grown to bo one of the most popular institutions on the estate, were thoughtfully initiated by the manager, Mr Reynolds, with the object of giving the employe's some amusement in lieu of the Christmas holidays, which occur at the busiest time of the year. The experiment has proved thcroughly successful, and the Woodlands sports come round as regularly as autumn. The attendance of employe's (European and native) was large, and many of the neighbouring settlers and some invited ghests were prosent. The prizes consisted in _ no case of money, but were all arricles either useful or ornamental. They comprised a handsome silver epergne, the gift of the directors, a silver cup given by Mr L. D. Nathan, and a handsome clock presented by Mr R. Arthur. There were 18 events, and two or throe prizes were given for each. Mr Williamson, of Tauwhare, had a temperance booth on the ground for the general public; the permanent employes and the visitors were kindly entertained by Mi and Mis, Reynolds. At the cloieof the day's splits the prizes were presented to the successful competitors by Mrs Reynolds, on the lawn in front of the house. Mr McNicol, the winner of the two champion prizes, the eporgne and silver cup, said this was the second time he had won the epergne, and he meant to stick to these spoits. They kept up a healthy spirit of livalry among the employes, and were productive of much good. He added that the man who had won the teapot in the married man's race would have to run much faster next year, as he (Air McNicol) meant to try very hard to win it, a statement which was greeted with much laughter. Gieat credit is due to the committee for the admirable way in which the programme was carried out. Mr S. Ormerod filled the important position of judge, and gave the fullest satisfaction.
