In consequence of damaging 1 leports concerning tlio bead toacber uf the public school at Kihiluhi having been sent to the Boaid of Education by Messis Andiew Kay and Edwauls, Mr Goodwin, one of the boaid's in->pectois armed on Monday, for the purpose of holding 1 an official enquuy. About forty lesidents of the town and distiict assembled t > hear the enqun y. A coi respondent supplies us with the iollowmg lepoit of the pioceedingo on Tu>>day morning :— Mr Ed wank was hist called upon, and stated that he had frequently seen Mr Nicholson intoxicated, and had heaid him sing an minimal song m Andersons Hotel. Mr Goodwin asked Mr Edwards for his definition of diunkenncss, if it confuted in falling about, or otaggoiiug in the stieets, to which Mr Edwards leplied that that it was neither one 1101 the other, but he had frequently seen the teacher muddled through diink. Tho following dialogue then ensued : — Mi Goodwin • Did you e\ov hear Mr Nicholson sing an iinmoial song in a public-house ? Mr Ed waul-, was then nifonned that he wight call witnesses to corroboiate his statement, wheieupon he called Mr Cowan, but that gentleman declined to have anything to say in tho matter. No other witnesses being called, Mi Nicholson was informed that' he might adduce testimony on his liehalf. Mes.is llutchinsou and Monciietl' g-i\e simil.u evidence, and Mi Nicholson was proceding to call othois wlien Mi Edv\aids haid it was useless to bring any more forwaid, as they all appiientlv intended to follow in tlie sains stiain. Mr Andiew Kay was then called by the inspector, but did not answer, and Mr Cowan explained that he was away at Raglan, but was expected to leturn that e\ ening. Mi Cloodw m said in order to gn c Mi Kay every oppoitunity of being piesent he would adjourn the enquny until 4 p.m. the following day. On Wednesday, at the hour named, Mi Goodwin lc^umed the enquiry, but theie was no appeal ance of Mr Andiew Ka^. Mi Nicholson was then called, and denied all the chaiges In ought against him. Mr W. H. Giace said the leporta sent to the Board of Education weie malicious fabrications, which he would show if lie weie allowed to make a statement. When the ])io3ccdings tenniuated at ten minutes to five o'clock Mr Kay bad not put in an appearance.
