DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER. The sudden death of Mr J. McDonald on the 13th inst., has been the cause of much sorrow in our district. Although he never at any time occupied a very prominent position in the management of our local public affairs, he was well respected, and his death haa been the means of taking from us one of our pioneer settlers.

BUAPUKE LIBRARY. Perhaps no institution here has made such satisfactory progress, under so unfavourable circumstances, such as the •oarcity of subscribers &c, as the Ruapuke Public Library. What subscribers there are, however, have no reason to feel dissatisfied with the result of their exertions, when they have been able to claim a share of the Government subsidy to the tune of £9 10s lOd, „

RAGLAN-KAWHIA BOAD. Satisfactory progress is being made with the construction of this road. It is now almost formed as far as Aotea harbour. A little difficulty has been experienced in pacifying the Maoris through whose possessions the road passes, and they one and all complain that Mr Bryce hag behaved very discourteously towards them in not condescending to ask for their permission to take the road through, which they, say they would have given if he had done so.—(Own Correspondent, March 17.)
