A lad named Braddon, aged eleven, was drowned in the swimming baths to-day. He was bathing with other lads, when he was seized by another lad, who was also nearly drowned. When the body was recovered all efforts failed to restore life. The business of the University Senate to-day was devoid of public interest.
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Sir William Fox to-day laid the foundation stone of the Y> nag Men's Christian Association new building in the presence of a large assemblage. At Hirathcote all the candidates nominated for the Licensing Committee are temperance men. A final meeting of the Exhibition Committee was held to-ui^ht. The balancesheet showed the receipts to have been £3002 10s lid, and the expenses £2879 J6s Bfl.
Wednesday. William Farquhar, a farmer at Amberley, was gored to death by a two-year-old bull, his own property. The body was in a feai fully mangled condition when found.
DUNEDIN, Tuesday. Tliis afternoon theie was a heavy fall of hail. One stone weighed three-eighths of an ounce. There has been heavy rain bince.
Wednesday. The eighteen months old child of Mr Geo. McDonald, a settler at Mangahie, was scalded to death tlnongh falling into a bath of hot water during the absence of the mother, who had lett the room to piocure some cold water. The Commissioner of Crown Lands has received notice of appeal in the StrathCaien dunimyism cases At this morning's sitting of the Land Board, Mr A. C Kimbell, the next highest bidder lor Peai sell's Station, which is one of tho->e forfeited, applied to be declared the purchaser, and it was jesolved to oLtain the advice of the Crown Solicitor as to whether, if the declared purchaser of a section has Ins lights forfeited, the next highest bidder can be the purchaser. Should MrHaggitfc's> opinion he against such a couise, the matter is to be remitted for the consideration of the Minister of Lands.
WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A number of (Jhinese residents in Wellington have made a donation of £37 17s to the funds of the hospital. Messis Buird and Hutchison, M.H.K., have been added to the Caswell Sound Company directorate.
Wednesday. Mr Hunt's counsel in the action against Sir Arthur Gordon has been summoned to Wellington by the judges of the Appeal Court, to endeavour to come to a final settlotnent.
