NAPIER, Thursday.

Is* all three licensing districts in the town the teetotal candidates were beaten by a large majority. Mr Ormond headed the pole in every district. At the last moment the Borough Solicitor ruled that under the regulations of The Local Elections Act every voter must vote for five candidates, or the papers would be invalid, so the teetotallers had to vote for three on the other side. The new Working Men's Club was opened last night. It is a finer building than that of the Hawke's Bay Club.

Friday. A six-roomed house, workshop and stable, wero destroyed by fire eaily this morning in Manse-street. The inmates were roused by the screams of the children, by which time the flames had obtained a good hold. The family escaped in their nitjht clothes. The fire brigade was quickly on the spot, but there was no occasion for the engines, as there was a splendid pressure of water. Being in an out-of-the-way part of the town, however, by the time the brigades arrived, there was no hope of saving the premises, and the fire had communicated with the stable and workshop, which, being but shells containing inflammable material, were quickly consumed. The efforts of the brigades was therefore directed towards saving the adjoining dwellinghouses. Insurances are as under : — Dwelling-house, £'200 ; furniture, £100 ; workshop and stables £25 each in the Victoria Office.
