SHEEP-BREEDING.

TO THE EnirOK. Sin, — My attention has been called to a letter written by Mr J. A. Douglas., and published in your issue of the sth mst., in refeience to working up a Shropshire flock by cro^s-breeding. No doubt the idea might be carried out to great advantage, but a considerable time must neceshanly elapse before anything like what could be termed " pure Shropsliires '' would be produced. It may, however, interest some of your readers to know that there are Shropshires, pure and simple, already in the colony, as I brought with me f1 om England by the " Tongariro," which arrived last month, four Shropshire ewes and a ram, the ewes having been previously mated with othei rams unconnected with them. They were selected from the well-known flock of Henry Town&hend, Ebq., of Caldecote Hall, Warwickshire, and can be seen at .any time by appointment upon the farm of Messrs G. Ballard and Co., adjoining Buckland station. — I am, &c, J. Ballard. Cotele House, Symond-street, Auckland, January 23rd, 1884.
