THE CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

We are very pleased to notice that this deserving institution still continues to prosper, and develop in its usefulness. This is a sure sign that the public of the district appreciate the value of a library and reading room, and are determined that having for a time enjoyed its advantages and learned to know its true value, they will not allow it to pass mt > the retrogressive state, an inclination not unfrequently manifested in regard to deserving institutions. The annual meeting in connection with the library will be held next week, but the day has not as yet boen fixed, when a very satisfactory b.ilunce-sheet will be presented by the energetic secretary and treasurer, Mr Jno. Doc's. The total amount of subscriptions for 1883 is £80 3s ; this is supplemented by private donations to the extent of £2. The Government subsidy for the year was £29 17», making the entire income £112. During the year the large sum of £48 10s was expended on books and periodicals. We hope on the occasion of the annual meeting the members will attend in good number. The librarian, Mr Dods, is to be congratulated on the good conduct and success of the library.
