RAGLAN. WAIPA AND RAHLAN ROAD.

Thk tender, for the lepahing of this road having been at last invited, we may look foi waul to see it being made mine fit for traffic .it an early date than it is at piesent. I think it unfair that the Public Woiks Department have omitted to leave a copy of the specifications of the woik at the Raglan Post Office. As it is, Raglan tendeier.s will have to go to Hamilton, Auckland or the Thames before they can see them. TELEPHONE UXll, On the 27th hist, the steamer, with Mi Rolleston, Minister of Lands, and Mr Cooper, Undcr-Secretai y, on boatd came into Raglan, for the purpose of discharging 300 telephone poles and 2jr tons of wire, for the erection of the Hamilton and Raglan telephone wiie. Mr Orchiston has now a number of men busily employed in its construction, and hopes to have it ready for use within three month. It has taken a deal of persuasion and agitation to induce the Government to confer this boon upon us, and we are grateful for it. HAGLAN AND KAWHIA RO YD. Mr Hursthouse, who has been appointed as engineer for this road, purposes &0011 beginning work again upon it. The Maoris are quite jubilant, as they were getting very bcarce of food, and will now have can opportunity of earning some money with which which to purchase the necessaries of life. At present there appear* to be little prospect of any obstruction being offered by the natives towards the making of this road. They have not gained much from the course of conduct which they pursued in obstructing the work a few months ago, and it is not very likely that they will again adopt the same policy. There is just a small chance that the Ngatitewhahis may offer some trouble when their land is reached. They are, however, but a small tribe, and do not own much land, so that their opposition will not go for much. An effoitis to beinade toget the Survey Department, who have chaige of the -\\ork, to let it by contract in small sections to the Maoris. It will, I have no doubt, be done cheaper in this manner. It is pleasing to know that it is to be again gone on with, and it is to be hoped that it will now be finished before it is stopped. Mr Rolleston, Minister for Lands, and Mr Duncan, county chairman, lode f 10111 Raglan to Kawhia on Saturday last, for the purpose of seeing the proposed route of the road. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr T. Mitchell is now effecting considerable improvements* to the teacher's residence for the Board of Education. The steamers Hinemoa, Hannah Mokau, and Douglas were m the harbour on 30th inst. The natives have decided to make an application to have the fine block of land known as the Makaka put through the Laud Court. The heavy Avinds which we have had lately have done considerable damage to our grain crops. — [Own Correspondent, December 31.]
