COMUS DRAMATIC CLUB.
The members of the above club gave their fiist private enteitninment of the season 1883-4 at the Oddfellows' Hall, Hamilton, on Tuesday evening. The night being fine, the hall was filled with one of the largest and most appreciative audiences we remember in Hamilton. On this occasion the membeis produced an original mubical drama, written and arianged by one of themselves." The author has selected some of the most beautiful and hti iking works of the German and French composers, has written English words to thorn, and arranged the whole in thefonn of a dramatic sketch, Among the selections we may mention two songs and a duet fiom " Don Giovanni, "' Beethoven's splendid music to " Kennst dv das land," Handel's "Lascia Ohiopanga," and numerous other beautiful compositions, while the more popular element is represented by German and French pati iotic songs, selections from " Madame Angot," and the well -known volkslied "The Loreley." The inhabitants of the Waikato have, unfortunately, few opportunities of cultivating a taste for the higher classes of music; nevertheless the concert was an unqualified success, and the members of the club defaerve our thanks for demonstrating that the woiks of Beethoven and Mozart may bo made as "popular" as the ephemeral production* of "Miss Maudlin," or "The Great Splash." The performance itself — with the exoep. tion, perhaps, of a little unsteadiness m some of the concerted music— was all that could be desired. The club weie fortunate in allotting the r6le of the heroine to a lady whose highly cultivated voice onablod her to render the numerous songs falling to the part of " Marie" with true artistic feeling and expression. "Catherine" was a finished piece of character acting. Messrs Swarbrick and Smith gave to their respective characters the careful acting and attention to dramatic effect which distinguish all their impetsonations. Mr Burnand wan a capital type of a French soldier, and the Momhvx JUdgeaumbo and Gieen contributed an effective chorus. Messis Tern pier and Warner were all that a conductor and accompanist should be. Mr Bell's stiing band contributed the overtures in their well-known style. The dresses and general mounting of the piece were capital, and the whole performance
pahhed off ino&t smoothly. The perfovuianoo concluded with the laughable sketch "A Silent Woman," hi which the lady playing the title rdle demon, strated, in a innst amusing manner, that a woman can really hold her tongue when it buits her purpose, —being ably supported by Messrs Swarbrick and Green, who played the part of lover and parent, respectively.
