TE AROHA RAGES.

TO THE EFHTOK. Sir, — In an article in your paper of the 4th inst. you inform the public you have received herious complaints from Waikato residents on what they are pleased to term the disgraceful conduct of certain matters connected with the late race meeting held at Te Aroha, and the complaints are more especially made with reference to the decision of the steward* in disqualifying Robert-the-Devil in the Cup Race, .and you also infer that the stewards were biased in their decision through having bets on Dewdrop, in whose favour the race was given. I give the names of the stewards, who were : Messrs Cuff, Wainwright, O'Halloran, Bradley, Laidlaw, and Lawless. Messrs Stafford, the judge, and < Buckland, starter, were also present at the meeting when 'the Erotest was considered for Robert-the->evil crossing in the straight, and I can assure you and your readers every opportunity was given to those interested to be present and give testimony, but almost the only one who responded to the bell-ringer's call was the jockey boy of the horse Robert-the-Devil, and he acknowledged in a very straightforward manner that he did cross the mare as stated, but it was an Aooident, as it occurred through his uning- the whip. The protest was for a cut»a», and that protest was fairly considered and decided on its merits. If you. had not, as I .conceive, va.th.ev unfairly s&o\yed some .disappointed persona (I am sorry for not seeing their "nainea 'in' print) to "air tHeir grievance by! attacking .thoroughly,, h.onest and honourable gentlemen who acted as stewards at our meeting, I should not have felt it neces-' s»iry to reply to your very^ unfair article, knowing and being atylo f> pmvo that the stewards 'acted.
