CAMBRIDGE ROAD BOARD.
Tm: usual monthly meeting of the above body was hold at the Ciiterion Hotel on Saturday last. Pie»ent : Meal's Jas. Tayloi (chairman), Jno. Giahato, Fonesst, Allwill and Smith. The minutes, weio road and continued. Thk Fkn Count Road.— The engineer repoited that it was not advisable to proceed with the improvements to the Fen Court road until the weather cleared up. Thi: Duatn'aoi: Schkmk. — Regarding this scheme the engineer lepoited that owing to the wetness ot the weather lie had not done anything in the matter, as in&tiucted at a foi mer meeting of the board. j Thk Nahkow's Road.— The contract for the formation on this load, the engineei .stated, had been suspended for tlio present, ah nothing could be done. JCwiin'V. Hill Impkovkventh. -The engineer .stated that this work had been commenced, but that if the weather did not clear up he would be obliged to .stop the conti actoi n. A Co.iin.vi.vr. — A complaint was consideied fiom Mr Houghton legaiding a hole which the boaid had made in fiout of his piopeity through the opening of a gravel pit. — It was ngrcod on the motion of Mr Smith that the engineer see Mr Houghton on tho mattei , and to make the best possible arrangement with that geutlom.ni. OunxTiox to a County Rvtk. — Mr Foirest stated that a proposal was at pro.sent bjfore the council to strike a special late over the Waikafco County. The Ciiwbiidgo lidhig", they were all aware, was well in funds ; whereas all the other lidingo in the county, so far at* he could learn, were in debt. His impression was that the object of the council in .striking this .special rate was to clear off the debt of the other ridings, and why therefore should they contribute to H'lieve the other ridings fiom their financial embarrasments. He conhidered it \eiy haid linch for them to ha\e to contribute to a .special rate whenever they could derive no benefit from it, as all their road* were provided for. He would ask their repitaentative in the council, MiGraham, to voe his bost endeavours not to have the rate struck over the Cambridge Riding. If the council continued to strike rates in this way, they would be struck out of their homes altogether. — The Clerk, in reply to a question, stated that the council had power to .strike a rate <>i 3s 4d without takinpf a poll. — Mr "Forrest then proposed : — " That the council be requested not to strike a county rate, so far as the Cambiidge riding was concerned, for the following ie<ib»ns : (1) that the county and the district road works, aie delegated to tois board, and at the present time are being carried out by this board ; (2) that since August, 1881, our ratepayers have paid £400 into the county funds, and have received only £120 in return, and the whole of the balance has been either deducted for special charges or expenses, or disbursed to the Cambridge Town' Boar d; (3) that our riding has funds in hand to meet all district charges."' — Mr Smith seconded. — Mr Smith thought the council should be abolished altogether.— Mr Forrest remembered that Captaiu McPheraou had stated, at a recent meeting of the council, that the whole of the other ridings were in debt with the exception of the Cambridge riding. — The resolution was then put and carried. Nkw Road neab Tamahere. —Mr Graham said he had a matter to bring before the board in reference to the road running through the Tamahere estate. A number of 'settlers were now living at the back of the estate, and, as a matter of course, would require a road to be opened, to give them access to their farms. ' He • wanted' to know if , they ; could make some ,way aoross the J gully I where the old bridge used to, be. . This was a road which had been given to the Government, and it would now require to be made. After some discussion on the'matter definite consideration was deferred till next meeting. State of Main Road.— The engineer reported that the surface of this road was in, very bad condition between Mr Gerran'»_ firm, and that of Mr StubbingV. It wanted rounding off, and the holes filling in — Mr Smith reported a portion of the same road in the vicinity of PLuitapu in a like condition. — It was agreed to carry out the necessary repairs. Victoria Road.— Mr Taylor considered this road would bo greatly improved at the Cambridge end if the thick growth of titreo and flax were cleared away. At present there was nothing but a mere track, and the road was n it only dangeious, but was also unsightly. In fact the road in the place complained of h.id never bt?en formed. — It was agreed tint the matter should be attended to. Acooonth.— A number of accounts were pawed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
