THE GRAVEL INVESTIGATION COMMITTEE.
l'O THE KMTOK. Sib, —I see in your issue of the (sth inst., a re|«irt from the above-mentioned conuintteH to tho Borough Council, in which the follow ing words sire continued: — "Mews Samles and Napper's measurement only accounting for 43V yards was owing either to the yia\el having sunk, or t ) unevemiess in the giouud." Now, .sir, it was owing to no such chcumstancu. It is dimply owing to the fact that no more than 13*. yaul.s weie e\ei put on the ground (unless they have hiiico been anted or taken away), <vnd this 1 will undeitake to prove, absolutely piove, if the giavel committee will stake £5 or £10 again.st my £."> or £10, tho lo.ser'.s money to go to Mime chaiituble purpose. I hay, sir, most deliberately, that the committee have bulked the question, and repoited against the evidence obtained by theniseh c-> on the matter. They told me that they had measured the giavel, and could make only '61 yards of it. They told me that Mi Cusseu's. man had only made a ni.uk on ,i piece of boaid for e.ich load that was delivered ; that he had never counted up those maikri, and could not h.iv how many loads had been delivered ; and they told me tl) at that piece of boaid had been gi\en to Mr Peat, and could not now be found. Yet now Mr (Ju-o'unV man ->ays 4i) louls v. eie deliveied. Has the board turned u|). and was it pu>duc "d t') the committee V The town clerk says he ha> me.iMiied t!»e contiactoi's dr<»v, ,iud found the measuienient ot it to coincide with the contractoi'h own ligiues. That may be .so, but who proved to the committee th.it at any one time Mich di.iy was full of grtttul. A man might easily deliver 4(1 loads of gravel in a dray capable of holding 1^ cubic yards, and yet not give c\en4o y.ud» altogether. Tdo not say that MrPe.it is to blame, because I do not know anything about the ciicum.stances of the ca^e, but i do say tliat the committee have repoited most incorrectly (to use a very mild term), and quite against the evidence they obtained, and that consequently they are not worthy the confidence of the burgessu-i —not having done their duty to their constituents. If they think they have, let them accept my challenge. In conclusion, I beg leave to say that I have not written this letter with any idea, of influencing the election for the Mayoralty, w hich is pending, because .so long as only Mr Peat and Mr Kno\ are contesting the seat, I should vote for neither.— l am, &c, T. G. &VNOK.S. Hamilton, Nov. fl, 1883.
