COACH COMMUNICATION TO FATETERE. POSTAL ACCOMMODATION.
Wk arc glad to learn that ' steps arc at last about to 1)0 taken to establish coach communication with Oxford and l'uteteie ; * also that arrangements will shortly be effected to open po->t-ofJices at these place-.. Mr • Halcombe, the entei pricing manager of the Patetere settlement, ha« boon exerting himself in the matters referred to, and will arrange with .sorno of oni loc.il coach ptopiietorn toiuti a con\ey.inee cat tying the mails as (if ton as necessity luquucs. This cann.it fail to be happy intelligence to those whose business lcquucs fiequent \isits to the interior ; and the accommodation tlm.s affoided to the public gcuuially will be very considerable. Ki-gauling the postal amuigements, we advocated some time ago the opening of post-offices at Oxford and liichtield, the increase of population and settlement necessitating immediate provision in this respect. The Government, we ha\ c little doubt, on propci representations being made, will have no objection to sub.sidi.-e, *ny, a biweekly coach, and there can be little feai , consideiing the piesent amount of tiaftic on the load, that the successful tenderer will be handsomely lecouped. Piob.ibly the Thames Valley Settlement Company, should the Government not favourably entertain the proposal, will give a subsidy. The time is not fai distant when wo hope to see Lichfield and the intermediate (settlements and .stations connected with Cambiidge by telephone. The guaiantee is comparatively small, and, considering the convenience which a telephone would be to the \aiious stations along the unite, it is very possible that those nio^t inteiested would not be ba;kwaid in gi\ ing it.
