JIKUI'INIi ]»: ANNUAL HPOKTS. The meeting for the pin pose of forming a Cdimnittue to carry out our annual Christm.i'i spoits, adveitised to take place on Satin day evening last, in the Public Hall, did not eventuate there. The night was so colrl no one could be induced to attend theie, and it was accoidmgly adjourned, by anaiigenient, to Mr P. J. Council's new hotol, and m the course of a few minutes his large 1 oom was fi Hod by th< >so interested, some hfty puisons being' piesenfc. Mr Helps, t,ha convenor of the meeting, not being piosuut, Mr Thomas Finch was called to tho chair. Mr Fiueh, on taking the chair, in a biief speech explained the object of the meeting, vi/i. : To appoint a committee and decide as to the nature of the sports, whether horselacmg or athletic, or both combined. Mr Chapman then rose and addiessed the chaiunaii. He was not out of order, he opined, if he asked that the balance-sheet of last year's sports be produced for the infoimation of those present at this meeting. A good deal of money had been collected, and it was nothing but light that the public who subscribed it should know how it had been expended. Mr Pistjiuqci, late hon. secretary, denied that Mi Chapman, or anyone else had a right to ask to see any accounts that had been closed, after being properly audited and passed nearly 1 2 months ago. It was casting a reflection on him. However, tne accounts were there and open for inspection. Some irregular conversation here took place, after which the Secretary read the balance-sheet and produced the vouchers, all of which had been passed and signed as correct by last year's committee. The meeting then proceeded to elect the committee, and fourteen names were duly pioposed, seconded, and balloted for, when the following gentlemen, ware found to be elected, viz, :' Messrs Lloyd, T. Finch, P. .T. Connell, H. Hallett, F." New.sham, T. Moule, A. Ahier, Foster, and W. Young. Mr Young then proposed, and Mr Newsham seconded, that a day's athletic sports should take place at Christmas. Mr Connell proposed as an amendment, that athletic sports and horse races combined be the day's amusement. Seconded by Mr J. Martin. This amendment caused a noisy discussion amongst tho athlefcio party, who strongly objected to the horse-racing forming any part of the programme, and the chairman had great difficulty in maintainin" order. The Chairman remarked that he had always found that unless there was a horserace or two included in their annual sports, the committee found great difficulty in getting any subscriptions from the settlers outside the district. After a great deal of talk on the subject the meeting divided, when nine only were 'found voting against ths amendment, which, was therefore qeqlajed. carried.. '* ' The niinorfyy were apparently not Batisfied, and, the chairman retiring,, the meeting
