OAMARU, Tuesday. A numbku of country publicans wore summoned to the R.M. Court to-day on charges of belling adulterated liquor. Professor Black had made an analysis of jthe liquors Hold by the publicans and found that they contained a considerable quantity of tannin. Defendants,' .solicitor had, howcvei, obtained anumber of samples of liquor out of bond, and these on being analysed by Professor Black .it Court were found to be as much adulterated as the samples obtained from the publicans. The cases weie theiefore dismissed, the evidence showing no knowledge of adulteration on the part of the publicans.
WELLINGTON, Last Night. The chess tournament, with living pieces, M.is a gieat .success. His Excellency the Governor was amongst tho^e present. Mr J. E. Redmond lectures hoie on Saturday night, and proceeds South on Tuesday. Justice Richmond delivered judgment in the Banco Court to-day, in le the <^ueen v. Taylor, arising out of the memm able illicit distillation of whisky in the Porirua district. It will be remembered that defendant with otheis was convicted of this offence, and ordered to pay a fine. Some technical difficulty then arose in connection with the matter of smeties, and on the case coming before the jury a veidict was given for defendant. At the Nisi Pruts sittings, Mr Bell, on behalf of the Crown, moved to set the verdect aside, and his Honour to-day gave judgment for the Crown. At the inquest on the ' shepherd, John Headland, a verdict that death resulted fiom drowning in Whareama River was returned.
DUNEDIN, Last Night. Mr Tibh, M.H.R., will address his constituents on Monday next, principally on Harbour Board matters, holding a meeting a month later on general politics. The Land Board to-day decided to hold an inquiry on the 31st with reference to the suspected cases of dummyism at Silver Peak and Waikouaiti. Edwards, and Scott begin their 48 hours' walking match to-morrow night at 10 o'clock. Scott has never walked more than 2-4 hours before, and Edwards is thought likely to win.
