Civil Cases. Ihakaiua v. CHAiiiiKS Walker. — Mr Greshara for plaintiff. Judgment summon'? for debt, £4-1 lls. No appearance of defendant. After taking the- etiaeucu of E. B. Walker, thd ca-^o -was adjourned till nevt court day. — G. Y. Floyd y. Major Mair.— Mr Gresham for plaintiff. The ]>laintitf claimed £4 15-3 for conveying natives fioni Te Awamutu railway station to Alexandra in Febmary, ISS2. The plaintiff deposed that when Tawhiao and his followers weie leturning from their visit to the European settlements, he was engaged by Major Mair to convey some of them to Alexandra in his waggon, which he did, chaiging os per head. He sent his bill in to Major Mair, who was then Native Agent. After waiting several months, and leceiving no reply to his claim, not knowing Major Mair'b wheieabouts, he forwarded hi^ account to the Native Office at Wellington, and received a letter in reply from the Under Seci etary, saying that he was directsd by the Native Minister toy inform him (plaintiff) that his claim could not be entertained as a Government liability. Plaintiff now sues Major Mair to recover the debt, as he was engaged by defendant. MiLewis corioborated plaintiff's evidence, and stated that it was true in every particular, as he introduced plaintiff to defendant, and was present and heard the agreement made. The evidence for the defence, which was taken at Ohinemutu under the Resident Magistrates Amendment Act, 1870, was to the effect that he was notjiable personally for the account, as he was acting under instructions from the Government. Judgment reserved. Several other cases were settled out of court.

Criminal Case. A Youthful Ovfendku. — Chas. Siffiett, aged 14, was charged on the information of Johanna Hays with u&ing insulting and abusive language. The language he u^ed i.s not generally made use of in polite society. He was also charged with using similar language to Patrick Hays at the same time and place. The bench reprimanded him severely for his depravity, and said that if he were not too old he would be sent to the training school. He was sentenced to 48 hours 1 imprisonment, and ordered to pay costs, 14s. This concluded the business. — [Own Correspondent, September 29th.]
