THE MATA UURA'S FROZEN MEAT.

A RrcurEß's cable message, dated London, September 28th, states that the frozen meat ex Mataura has been sold for soap-boilers' purposes at a half-penny per Ib. JSTone of it was marketable for ordinary consumption. The Christchurch correspondent of our Auckland morning "contemporary writing on Saturday says : — It is currently reported here that the loss of the Mataura's caigo was duo to the fact that the kidneys were not taken out of the sheep. A correspondent in the Times says: — "It is stated soou after the Mataura had sailed from Auckland that the kidneys weie not removed from the carcases of the sheep, and aUo that carcases were enclosed in wooden hoKoa. If this was true, and I believe there was foundation for the statement, it is the only cargo that has been shipped in such a manner from Now Zealand, and shows gross carelessness on the part of the •jhippcrs. Common sense tells me that the water in the kidneys will not freeze, and that wooden boxes, or coffins, as they now appear to be, must impede the air circulating. It seems, a pity that such mistakes should damage the fair name of New Zealand meat after the great exertions of the shipping comjianies in producing so promptly the necessary means for pushing the tiade to its utmost, and surely the Auckland shippers could have gleaned all information as to the mode of preparing and shipping after the repeated successes in the South Island."

[BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] AucKr- vni), Last Night. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received tho following report from London, dated 28th September :— Half the M.itaur.i's meat id bad. The chamber \va-> examined, and found perfect. Piopar tempuiatme w«i-» maintained throughout the passago. Expei ts aro of opinion that tho loss aiibes from the condition prior to shipment, the cargoes being insufficiently cooled.
