The Cambridge Cricket Club play a scratch match, the first of the season, in the Government paddock to-day. The tender of Messrs Bigg and Empson for 21 years' lease of the Kihikihi domain grounds, 42 acres, was accepted at the board's meeting on Thursday evening. The Auckland Agricultural Company has erected a fine new shearing shed and sheep station on their Paeroa estate near the .Rapids at Horahora. A meeting of natives was to have been held yesterday at Hukanui to meet Major Te Wheoro and Te Ngakau, who are making a tour round the bettlements, explaining the scope and objects of Mr Bryee's Land Act. In another part of this issue J&ill be found the programme for the Cambridge Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, to bo held on Wednesday, 21st November. There are six events, including a hurdle race and a stooplechasc of £30 each, and the Spring Cup of £50. The New Year's Meeting will be held on the Ist January. A concert will be given in the Alexandra Public Hall, by the pupils attending the public school, on Thursday, October 11th. The musical portion of tho programme, will be under tho direction of Mr T. A. Bell, and after tho concert, Jarloy's celebrated collection of animated wa\v orkrt, which have greatly delight jd other audience*, will lro exhibited. The whole will e-melude with a danco. The first anniversary services in connection with the Hamilton branch of the New Zealand Evangelistic Society will be held at Le Quosne's Hall to-moirow mm ning and evening, as advertised. Mr | Geo. A. Brown will pi each at both services. On Monday e\emng a tea and meeting will be held in the hall, at which speeches will lx) delivered by Messrs Brown, Aldridge, •and othcis. On Tuesday evening Mr Biown will lecture at tho same place on " Signs of the Times ; or, what are we coming to ?" A correspondent writes to us, remonstrating against the lcadiness with which .strangers' cattle are impounded at Cambridge, .since the lecent by-law of tho town board regaiding cattle on the streets of the town has been brought into foice. Ho says he know .s of one pewm who was driving cattle through the town, when, as is genei ally the case, some of them broke away from tho driver. It will be remarked with regret that on opening up the Mataura's cargo of frozen meat a poition of it wa.s discovered to be rotten. This i.s i\, chcuinstance to be deplored in any case, but it is paiticulaily unfortunate in tho present instance, as the Mataura was Auckland's pioneer ship in the trade. Moi eovei , this was not hei iir.it cargo of frozen meat, so that those in charge ought to have possessed a thorough knowledge of the business. No particular 1 * arc to hand, and the cause of the mishap cannot therefore l>e assigned.
