TEE WAIORONGOMA I R OAD DISPUTE.

TO THE EDIfOH. Sin, —ln your issue of the 13th inst. you were pleased to give a somewhat detailed account of the discussion which took place between Mr Whitaker and myself at the meeting of the Pinko County Council held at Cambiidgo. l^iom the repoit you have .submitted to the public, theie appears to me to be a misinterpretation of my motives, tuid the leasons which led me to act as ] did, and in vindication of the standpoint 1 adapted anent the road at Waiorongomai. 1 would like to add a few words, and thus clear myself of any imputations that may be laid to my charge. About two months ago Mr Hadfielcl purchased No. 3 section ot me. Shortly afterwards that gentleman told me that Mr West had infoimed him that he claimed the old load (the only road to No. 3 section), and that he proposed to fence it off, and thus .shut Mr Hadfield oft fiom the privilege of an entrauce to his section. Mr Hadtield, who had purchased the giound on the understanding th.it the road was to remain as it was, requested me to use my endeavoui.s to pi event Mr We->t from doing so. I intei viewed Mr West, and li 3 said that as the old load was his exclusive pioperty 3i he intended to fence it into his own section, in lieu of the road he gave to the Piako County Council, having that light by the agreement made with Mr Whitaker. I attended the meeting of the Piako County Council hold on the 15th August, and requested to see the agreement referred to. Both the clerk and the councillors were totally in ignorance as to any such agreement, and Mr Whitaker being absent, the matter was deferred till the next meeting, which took place last week, when Mr Whitaker produced the agreement, which gave Mr West the old road, with the condition, however, that should any objection be made against the closing of said road Mr West was to be compensated. This, then, is a true, uugai bled .statement of the matter as it stands. I have no interest, and if I had I have no desire to conceal or gloss over anything. I will always act in accordance with my convictions, and if at any time they should lead me astray, or cause me to hurt the feelings of any sensitive and guileless peison, I shall be the first to express my regret, and tender him such apology as will fully compensate him for his outraged feelings. I endeavoured in this case to do justice to my purchaser, not willing that anything should now intervene to deteriorate the value of the section which he bought; to heap abuse and detraction upon the name of Mr Whitaker could never have been my intention. Trusting you will kindly find space for the above, — I am, etc. P. Ferguson. Te Aroha, 21st Sept., 1883.
