THE RAI LW AY TA RI FF.

TO THE EDI roil. Sin,— Mr Millar, headsman, of Paterangi, tells me that ths height for one ton of potatoes fiom Auckland to the Ngaroto station ih 22s Bd, but that if ho gets up two tons of potatoes, fioni Auckland to ISgaroto .station the freight will only bo 21s 8d for the two ton.s, thus the railway will actually carry double the weight for le.ss money. .Surely the man who is trying his hand at the management of thit> depai tincnt of public business must ha\ c a bee in hife bonnet — some people heio call it having- a bhiugle loo.se. I really cannot see how he can have much knowledge of political economy or commercial mattei.s. May we hope that he will either voluntarily or by compulsion call in assistance and revise, and arrange the tariff for a moie simple plan. A short time ago there vas ouch a great flourish of trumpets in the announcement of an alteration in the chaigcs for potatoes, inanuies, corn, &c, to aud fiom Auckland, that we were led to believe that a subotantial change for the fnmieis' benefit had at last been made. Now it appears the alteration is fenced round with so many reservations, that there is little or no benefit by the change. Great credit is due to Mr Tole for taking up this question, and I hope that our Waipa M.H.R. will not foiget his duty to his constituents in the same dn-ection. It is no use to mince the matter, Mr Editor, but if our Government do not try more earnestly to foster the fanning interest, they may depend upon it that that interest will be brought to a dead-lock. No one can object more strongly than mysalf to direct State aid to any olaus ; but I advocate most strongly the necessity for the removal of every obstacle to progress, especially for the farming interest, because we depend upon them for our very existence. Surely every labourer is worthy of his hire. I am quite aware this matter leads strongly into political economy, and this railway freight question is at present one of the greatest subjects for consideration. — I am, <&c. J. Newland.
