Last Night. An extraordinary complication has aiisen here. In the City Council on Fiiday evening. Councillor Maginnity, at the eiid of the meeting, handed in his resignation. The city solicitor has advised tint there is no statutory provision enabling a councillor to resign, and' that to have effect the resignation must' be formally accepted by the council. A special meeting to accept this resignation was called to-day, but this forenoon i r.> Maginnity, in writing, withdrew it, and the council held a meeting in theafternoon when both the resignation and withdrawal were placed before it. By a majority of one the council accepted the resignation, and ordered a new election for Thorndon ward, quite ignoring the withdrawal. It now turns out that to-day's meeting of the com.oil is in itself illegal, through the proper notice not having been given. At the Divorce Court to-day, a rule nhi was granted in the case Biggey v. Biggey and anothei, on the petition of the husband, for a dissolution of marriage on the ground of the wife's adultery with the correspondent. The patties were married at'Burke's Pass/Canterbury in ISSO, and subsequently resided there, whence they came to this district.

CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night. Tho diamond drill was successfully started at the Springfield Colliery Company's works to day. The proceedings ended with a luncheon. A button of melted gold, ISdwts., was shown to-day by a miner, who stated that it was the result of a week's woik at Ninety Mile Beach.
