CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. A mketinu of the unemployed was held in Cathedral Square this morning. About 200 wore present. Several speeches were made, pointing out shortness of work, and blaming the Government for importing rolling stock for railways, instead of having it made hero. It was resolved to send a memorial detailing their grievances to Sir George Grey and Messrs Holmes and White, M.H.R. The proceedings were orderly throughout. Last Night. A prospecting association, with a capital of £1000, has been formed here to thoroughly prospect the head-waters of the Rnkaia and Wilberforce for gold. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received cable advices that the lonic arrived at Plymouth on August 24 ; the British Queen left Plymouth for Port Chalmers on August 23 ; the Tongariro, the first new steamer built jfor the company, was launched on August 23. It is stated that about eighty men are now working at Ninety Mile Beach, most of them averaging eight shillings per day. The petition of the unemployed, forwarded to Sir G. Grey on Saturday, bore 236 signatures.
THAMES, Last Night. The man Woods, burned at the fire at Parawai on Saturday, died in the hospital last night from the injuries he received. An inquest will be held tomorrow.
DUNBDIN, Last Night. Caleb Moore, well known in sporting circles, died suddenly while walking on the Ocean Beach, from heart disease. Hinde's claim at the Blue Spur, realised at auction £4600. At Port Chalmers, John Day, an elderly man, was committed for trial for criminally assaulting a girl of tender years. ,
