TE AR O HA.
Thk weather was mild and warm, consideling the season of tlie year, up till Thursday last. On that day a cold south-easterly wind set in, accompanied by heavy showers of rain, and continued during the night. On Friday morning the cap of Te Aroha mountain and the tops ot the ranges to the southward were covered witn snow. The snow line was about 1200 feet above sea level. There was a considerable amount of excitement among the young colonials, natives of Auckland Province, who had never bpfore seen the ground covered with snow so near at hand, and several paities of young men climbed the mountain as far as the snow line during the early pai tof the day. No doubt they indulged in having, for the first time in their lives, a snow-balling match when they arrived where the snow lay. At all events several large &now-balls were carried down, and exhibited in the town. On Saturday the snow disappeared from the trees, but eontinned to lie in the gullies and shady places during the whole of the day. Work on the upper parts of the tramway at Waiorongomai was entirely suspended, the snow lying on the ground to a depth of 9 to 18 inches. The formation of the railway is being carried on in our neighbourhood j a large gang of men are camped within half a mile of the river, and may be seen busy at work on the line between Moffats and the river. The bridge across the "YVaihou is not yet commenced, but the contractor means business in a very short time. Visitors are arriving here every day, and aic expressing the utmost satisfaction with the prospects of the place and the good show of gold at the mines. Business people are makiug enquiries about building sites, both at Waiorongomai and Te Aroha, and both townships are likely soon to be all occupied. The new Court-house and Warden's offices are now taken over from the contractor, and business was conducted there on Saturday last. We trust that the county council will take staps to form good footpaths from Whitakerstreet to Rewi-street, where the Post Office and Government buildings are situated, as as present the approaches are really disgraceful.
Mining. A reaction is taking place among the owners of claims, great energy is being displayed in collecting calls, and employing men to prospect on ground which has lain for some time past without any work being done in prospecting. The Hero,. Queen, Ruby, Waiwera, Lady Fergusson, .and others ai'eabout' & main the ground dfejayi ? Ne'vf '' f claims
country found there enticing men to spend time and 'money in piospecting in that direction. The works in connection with the mines and the tramway are being pushed on as fast as possible, and all are anxious for the fine weather to set in to enable the tramway to be completed, and to get the battery started.
