DUNKDIN, Thursday. The Public Works Department has ottered to open a section of the Otago Central railway for the unemployed at 28s aweek but this the men consider inadequate. The plaintiff in the case of Johnston v. the Land Board, in which the .Supreme Court here decided against the plaintiff, has made an application for a mandamus, to compel the Board to issue the license refused, because of a suspicion of dummy ism. A detailed list of shippers of frozen meat from Otago has been published. The total number of sheep sent since February, 1882, is over 62,000. Tlmtf. Z. and A. L. Company, who on more than one occasion chattered a ship-for themselves, have sent 18,000 ; five owners have sent over 3o,ooo, two over'2ooo, and aeveralover 1000. Altogether there have been 57 shippers. Quite a trade is clone amongst shareholders in the Refrigerating Company in selling their space allotments at a premium. For instance, there were 1000 applications by shareholders for space in the British King, yet only 47 shippers, and 130 applications are already made in the case of the British Queen, The Government admit liability, as common carriers, for the railway sheds fire, and offer to let all claims be decided on their merits. Mr Hanuay, assisted by legal advice, is investigating them.
