Road Improvements at Tb Aroha. — A communication was received from Mr Purchas, county engineer, saying he estimated that to make the road through Mr Murphy's property, fiom the Waiorongomai landing, would cost £45. As to the proposed road through Messrs Wilson nnd Joy's property, these gentlemen could not jointly agree on the matter of allowing the road to pass through their property. The line approved of by Mr Wilson was not approxed of by Mr Joy, and vice versa. The change they considered r.ould not benefit then property. The new road would coat about £120. Estimated the cost of making a a good diagonal ro.ul through Shaftc3bary at £100.— Cr. Firth proposed that any further action in the matter be deferred till the next meeting.— Agreed to. It was also agreed that Cr. W r hitakcr be asked to confer with Mr Purcliaa on the matter, and report at next meeting. CKUhTERY FOR Te AliOHA.— Mr Fei Iguson, of Te Aroha, attended on behalf of the people of that district, and dicw attention to the necessity of a proper cemetery site there. The present site was most inconvenient — Cr. firth agreed to take the matter in hand on his coming visit to the Aroha, and if possible make some arrangement in the matter Avhen there. DISHOXBST CONTRACTORS. — Mr T. G. Sandca, engineer, reported on the state of the main road to Te Aroha. Since last meeting he had had four surfacemen engaged on the road keeping it open for traffic. During the recent flood the approaches to some of the new bridges had been washed away on account of defective and dishonest work on the part of the contractors. Some of the planks were not nailed to the piles, and so when the flood came the whole work gave way. One pile supposed to be 18 feet long was cut short after being driven in 13 feet. In more than one instance dummy piles were driven in. One bolt in some cases was made do service for two The whole disclosed a dishonest intention on the part of those who did the work. The consolation to the council was that the contractors who had thus tried to wrong them had to pay for the increased cost of making the job good.— The council considered tho engineer's report betrayed a most disgraceful state of affairs. They considered it well that the money for the contract; had not been paid.— On the motion of Cr. Firth, it was agreed that the clerk be instructed to write to the contractor, asking him for an explanation of the serious charge which had been brought against him in the engineer's report, a copy of that document to be forwarded him j the explanation to be to hand by next meeting.
