WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
TiiK' usual monthly meeeing of the above body was held at the council chambers, Hamilton East, yesterday. Present : Cnpr. Steele (chairman,) Crs. Wells, Hewitt, Runciman, Primrose, Graham and Johnson. Works at Raxgiriri.— Mr Durand applied to the council to have a culvert constructedfacross the road at his farm near Churchill, volunteering to provide the labour himself and half the cost of the material.— Cr. Johnson referred to the matter at some length, and suggested the advisability of the engineer examining and reporting on the various works necessary in the Rangiriri district. The culrert was on the main line of road. The matter was left with the engineer to attend to. Levying a Rate. — Cr. Runciman proposed, in accordance with notice given at the previous meeting of the council, that a rate of one farthing in the £ be struck on the rateable property in the Rangiriri outlying district ; also, f that a rate of l-36th of a penny intbe ' £ be struck on the rateable property in the Kirikiriroa riding.— Carried. ' i Thb £29.— Cr. Graham drew the attention of the council, to the long standing claim 'of £29, which was due the' Cambridge highway district o\v account^ of 'the I ambridge Town Board -having overdrawn on the Karapiro bridge account." >' ; A *< lengthy discussion ensued ion this matter, in which Cr. Wells repudiated the liability ot the town; board. .Primrone asserting that Cr, Wells had himself undertaken to get £100 from the Tnotaoroa board as their contribution to* wards the erection of * the fcarapiro bridge. This J 'Cr. Wells positively denied, .and referred the meeting to the minutes 1 , which were accordingly perused, Finally, Cr. .Wells moved that it be an -instruction ,&' the clerk >to * prepare a statement of the riding accounts as be* tween the Cambridge town riding and the Cambridge country riding, and to admit ,all payments on account of Karapiro from either. Seconded by Cr. Hewitt, and carried unanimously.. The Maori Dog Nuisance! — Cr.'Runciman. again drew the attention of the council to this growing, he would say insufferable, nuisance. Though he had -several times previously brought the matter forward nothing had as yet been done. The settlers were unable to bear the nuisnnce any longer. These mangy curs of the natives did great damage to stock, and considering this, together witli tho factthsit they were unregistered, it was really too bad, as European settlers had to pay. The Europeans considered it agi eat hardship.— On the motion of Cr. Wells, it was agreed to write to the member for the district, Mr J. B. Whyte, asking him to have it made law, if possible, that it should be an offence for any pcrsou to own or have in his possession an unregistered dog ; instead of having, as at present, to prove that the owiht had had the dog in his possession for fourteen days. Punt at Huntly.— Cr. Johnson read a letter to the council which the memorialists in his district had received from Mr J. B. Whyte on the above matter. The letter advised the Bettlera to request the council through their representative to urge upon the Raglan County Council to get the road pushed through the native land immediately. It was agreed that, as the Raglan County Council had not bothered themselves in the matter of the punt, that if the Government indemnify the council against loss, it will un.der.take to proceed with the work, and ascertain the owners of the native land. Hanging op the ' ounties Act.— The Chairman thought they should take stops to make Kangiriri a road district. If the ratepayers in the district refused to assist in the formation of a road district they should ask the member for the distiict to have a clause inserted in the Counties Act compelling them. — Cr. Wells thought the gentlemen present, as chairmen of the various highway boards, should take stops to have the Counties Act hung up in tho county, and then Raugiriri would be compelled to have a road district. — Cr. Rnnciman thought Cr. Wells' suggestion impracticable. It would cost at least £140 to get the Maoii votes alone. They must ge~t three-fifths of the entire ratepayers in the county to sign the memorial.— Cr. Wells suggested that the member for the district be requested to have the percentage reduced, or else have it that a majority should carry the point. — Suggestion agreed to. ; Accounts. — A number of accounts were passed for payment. Bridges at Raxgiriri. — The Engineer was instructed to call for tenders for the construction of four bridges in the above district, the same to be constructed under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. This concluded the business, and the council then rose.
