Mr Kexxeth Kerr, the reputed proprietor of a small local print "called Fads, was this morning committed for trial for publishing a defamatory libel on Mr W. L. Rees, reflecting ou bis hona fides as connected with the business of the Native Lands Company. The libel complained of appeared in an article in Facts published on the 6th instant, the purport ol which was that the Pouawa Block, in common with Paremata, Waimate, Kaiti, Mangahea No. 1, and the other blocks claimed by the New Zealand Native Land Settlement Company, were obtained by fraud and perjury. The Magistrate said in his mind very gross libel had been published of Mr Rees. Au information was also laid against the printer, Mr 0. H. Webb, but Mr Rees being absent when the case was called ou, it was struck out. Last Night. At the Harbour Board meeting, Wells and Gardiner, of Auckland, were- ths successful tenderers for the proposed wharf extension at Gisbirne, the tender beiujj for £1385. The highest tender wa« £1875 10s.
