POTATO ELECTION.
Thk Journal of Horticulture has held a potato election^ of which the following are a portion of the results : — One hundred and sixty cultivators from all parts of the kingdom replied. Each submitted a list not exceeding twelve, or not more than four in each section, first early, second early, and Lite varieties. Frst Earhes : Considering that no cultivator named more than four varieties, it is a little surprising to find that no less that sixty-nine sorts have been lonn 1 worthy of mention. In this section Myatt's Prolific heads the list, havin<> been recommended by ninety-nine cultivators ; Veitch's Improved Ashleaf, by eighty-sevfii ; Rivers' Royal Ashleaf, by fifty-aix ; Old Ashleaf, by forty-six ; Early Rose, eighteen ; Monas Pride and Beauty of Hebron, fifteen each ; Early Coldstream, fifteen each ; Early Hammersmith, ten ; Early Biul, nine ; .Snowflake, Porter's Excelsior, and Early Racehorse, six each. .Second Earlies : no less than eighty-seven varieties have been recommended in this section, the comparatively new variety Schoolmaster heading the list with fifty-nine votes, followed by Dalmahey with forty ; Covent Garden Perfection, twwnty-nme ; Fortyfold, twenty-seven ; Woodstock Kidney, twenty-five ; Snowflake, twenty-four ; Porter's Excelsior, Lapstone and Beauty of Hebron, fifteen each ; GrampaiAn, thirteen ; Myatt's Prolific, Early Rose and Gloucestershire Kidney twelve each ; ana Prince Arthur, ten. Late varieties : Here there is a great falling off in the number of sorts, only forty being named. Magnum Bonum has the piemier place with one hundred and thirty-two votes, thus only thirty out of the one hundred and sixty cultivators failed to name it ; one hundred and eij;ht recommended Scotch Champion ; eighty-one, Patersons Victoria ; forty • two Schoolmaster ; twenty-nine Lutton's Reading Here ; twenty-three, York Recent; fifteen, Dunbar Repent ; nine each, Skerrey Blue, Rocks, and Red-skinned Flourball ; eight, Vicar of Laleham ; seven, Fluke ; and six Grainpaign.
