Yi'sn rda\ — [Hi'foie Ins Honom Jud^c Puckcy .inti Assessor Hon Rohi ]

Important Speech by Rewi. The court opened .it 10 o'clock this morning, m hen theie was a large number of natives and others pros"nt. His Honour informed the natives that there was no further work to be done at that sitting, and the court was now about to close for the present. He would name the cises which had not been dealt with, with a view to their fotmal adjournment to the 2nd October. The cases wore thon road o\ er, and adjourned one by one to the above-mentioned date. Before the coiut closed Rewi Mania - poto, the well-known chief of the Kingite party, got up and said : — I wish to say a tew -\\oids to the court. For many years I have been a stranger to the Europeans, abiding with my people who went into the win with the Europeans. I have often heard of these courts, but we Hauhaus as a body have picviously had no faith in them. I have once or twice bi-fore looked in a land court for a few minutes, and then went away. I ha\ c now been present at this court for many days, and my desiie before the court finally breaks up, and we return to our respective homes, is to say that I have been very much impressed with the procedure, and with the care taken by the judges and the assessors, and the ample opportunity given to all of the parties appearing, whether European or Maori, to bring forward their respective claims. .So much so, I am quite convinced now, that it is proper that I should introduce the court into our own country. You have agreed to take certain cases at Kihikihi, but I will carry the work further. When we meet at Kihikihi I will have something else to say in reference to all the rnatteis which regulate the court and guide its proceedings. In the meantime, I wish to express to my native friends now present my satisfaction with the procedure and business of the court. Some little disQuasion then took place as to when the oourt should be held at I£ihikihi, Rewi and other chiefs residing fn that part of the country wished the court not to name a day at once, but to give them time to prepare the necessary food for the other natives who might have ta.attend the court, and who come from distant places. This closed all the business, and the court was thereupon formally adjourned till the 2nd October next.

A list of defaulting ratepayers in the Kinkirhoa Ro.id District, against whom sum-m-nses have- been issued, appears in our advertismg columns. A special meeting of Lodge William Johnson, L.0,L., will be held at Cambridge on Friday evening next in the Oddfellows Hall. Members and voting brethren are requested and invited^ toatfpnd.' Mr J. S.
