LICENSING DIFFICULTIES AT CAMBRIDGE.
Titr licensees of Cambridge hotels find tliemsfh us in a somewhat awkw.inl posituin as to w lioiii they ought to have paid their licoiw fees to. Ma\ ing been to an extent convinced that they have paid the money to the wiong party they are now smiousl) contemplating piying it to a second piU ty, whom they believe to be the only party entitled to receive the money, and then taking lej^al proceedings against the h'i'3t receiver, should he refuse to refund, for the recovery of what they h ive paid him, and which, lpgally speaking, in their opinion, he had no tight to receive. After tho Cambridge Licensing Commissioners had gt anted the licenses to the various applicants tho clerk of the bench forwarded the duplicates to dipt. McPherson, clerk to the Waikato County Council, for th.it ofHcer to issue the licenses and receive the money, believing in doing so that Cajtt. McPhcison was the proper person to receive the licensing revenue for the county. At the meeting of the county council held on Friday last Cr. Hewitt, who repie&ents Cambridge in the council, applied for the amount of the licensing revenue, £160, coming to his poition of the distiict. Cr. ft. S. Graham, who represents the Cambridge country district, applied to the meeting to have some £29 due by the C.imbiidgc Town Board to the country bo.ird, deducted from the £100 coming to the foimer body. This proceeding Cr. Hewitt strenuously objected to, refusing to receive anything short of the full amount, and requesting that the matter of tho £29 should be allowed to stand over till the next meeting for discussion. He was, however, over-ruled by the council, who decided that the money bhould bo paid over minus the geneial chaiges and the disputed £20; but C. Hewitt, believing such deductions to be illegal, refu&ed to accept payment in part, and came away without the checiue. The clerk to the council forwarded the cheque which Cr. Hewitt refused to receive to the clerk of the Cambridge Town Board, who in his turn returned the cheque to the council. The Chairman of the Cambiidge Town Board, Air T. Wells, having looked into the matter, was convinced that Capt. McPher&on had illegally received monoy for licenses which he had no business to receive, and thereupon instructed the clerk of the local board to write to Capt McPherson to the effect that he had issued what purported to be certificates of licenses to hotel-keepers in thf Cambridge Town District, informing him of the illegality of such a course, and asking to have the money immediately handed over to the board, and giving him to understand that if this demand were not acceded to immediately legal proceedings would at once be instituted. We have not as yet learned the nature of Capt. McPherson's reply to this demand, but no doubt the matter will be attended to immediately. Again, the Cambridge Town Board assert that they do not owe the £29 to the district board as stated by Cr. Graham ; at the very most they only owe £13, which sum we believe they will pay at once.
