CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night.
At 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon the hotly of a, young man was found in Hagley Park shot through the heart. A revolver was found lying near the body, which was discovered through the stiange behaviour of a dog watching near it. Deceased had money and a watch in his pockets, and also a letter signed H. de Long, written in reply to an adveitisement for a canvasser for maps. The letter was an application tor the appointment, but had evidently not been sent. In the course of the evening the body was identified as Heniy F.odurick Tonge. who lived here about two jeai-. ago. Information was to-day received by Mr YVickes, of the Western Mining Exchange, that a payable goMHeld had been discovered in Can tcrbiuy by three piospectors, who brought in A sample of washed dirt, in which fine gold was plainly perceptible. The prospcctoia stated their intention of not making tho locality public until a guarantpe of £bOO is forthcoming from the public.
