HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES YESTERDAY.

The House met at 2.30. >'E\V BILLS. The following new bills, among others, were introduced, and read a first time : — Repeal of Compulsory Vaccination (Dobson), School Inspectors (Smith), Religious Charitable and Educational Trust Board Incorporation (Dargaville).

PRISON LABOUR. Mr Hutchinsou moved " That the teaching of trades and the employment of skilled labour in gaols are regarded by this House as inimical to an enlightened system of prison discipline, and prejudicial to the interests of free skilled labour and the country, and that it is desirable that such teaching of trades and employment of skilled labour should be cliscoutinued as soon as possible." Messrs Bracken and Joyce supported the motion, and Messrs Fish and Shepherd opposed it. Mr Connolly, at some length, supported the system of teaching trades in gaols, and said the woiking men were simply used as a stalking horse for political purposes. Messrs Swauson and Fitzgerald opposed the motion, and Mr Montgomery uunsidered it altogether to sweeping, and could not therefore suppoit it. Mr Tole moved, as an ami'iidnipnt, " That a return of the number anil classification of prisoners employed in trades be laid on the table." Mr Tunibiill opposed tho motion. The debate was interrupted b}' the dinner adjoin nment.
