One of the most appalling catastiophes for many years past occurred at Sunderland last night. A children's fete was held during the evening in the Yictoi ia Hall, fully two thousand being j^'t-'s-ent, and tho entertained having ended, the children were leaving the building when a false alarm of fire was laised. A panic rush was made for the staircase, in descending which may fell and ■were trampled upon by those following. The outlet became blocked, and befonthe panic could be allayed, and the stn.ii case cleared, one bundled and eighty had been crushed tn death, and many others smously injured. The calamity earned piofound distress and gloom over tho < i ret,r ct, and sympathy is univeisjlly expressed ior the biilfereis and their relatives.
