Found Dead in Bed. Auckland, Last^ Night. JoiIAXNA Burkb, a woman of intemperate habits, was found dead in bed in Cook -street. The cause is obscure.

A Suspicious Case. v *^M Some surprise was created in town Jj^| the circulation of a report that a w^^* known local commission agent has been served with a criminal summons charging him with attempting to bribe a public official. Enquiries prove the rumour true. The defendant, W. Y. Stevens, of Queen-street, it is alleged, offered a bribe of £200 to Mr Lewis, Under-Secre-tary of Native Affairs, with the object of influencing a disposition of native lands. Communications passed between Auckland, and Wellington on the subject, and information was laid against Stevens to-day, with the full concurrence of the Government, Stevens appears as defendant at the police court on Wednesday. Mr. Theo.- Cooper is retained- for the defence, Mr Hudson Williamson,'. Crown Solicitor, prosecuting.'
