The Austral. The Orient Steamer Austral, which anchored in the Rangitoto Channel last night to set up rigging, sailed early this morning. A crowd of excursionists went out and found her gone.
Temperance Teaching in the Schools. , The Board of Education, on Mr Bucklaud's motion, resolved 1 that it be optional with local committees whether Dr Richardson's book on temperance be used in the schools. Also, that the laws of health be tanght half-an-hour twice weekly.
Accident. An elderly man named Burnett, employed as a carter by Mr Layers, met with an accident on the Queen street wharf this afternoon. He wanted to drive his horse, and trap down one of the tees where the steamer Coromandel was lying, but was stopped by a horse which was about to be shipped. With the object of clearing the way, Burnett twisted the, animal's tail, whereupon the infuriated steed kicked out viciously, aud stiuck him in the chest. He was sev erely injuied, and was conveyed to the hospital. It is believed, that several ribs are bi'oketi/ " '
