HARAPEPE.

A very cowardly "attempt at malicious injury to the person was committed here on the morning of Friday, the Bth. It appears that Mr Thompson has been annoyed lately by dog 3 getting amongst his sheep at night, and not being able to catch or see the dogs, so as to identify thim, and his nearest neighbour, Mr Sherret, having had some killed and worried, Mr Thompson, after due notice, placed some poison on his farm, and the consequence is that some of the canine night-prowlers have come to grief, and lost the number of their mess. Amongit them was one owned by a man named Pohlen, who, being a very quarrelsome sort of a character, went to Mr Thompson's house, and threw a handful of limp in his face, and then ran away. Fortunately, very little of the lime went into the eyes, or the consequence might have been serious. Whether the case will be brought before a Magistrate I am at present unable to say, but the man deserves to be severely punished. Some time back he was committed to prison for a violent assault on the late Mr McMinn, and served a term of imprisonment in Mount Eden for it. In fact,' he is of such a violent quarrelsome disposition that he is hardly fit to be at large. Our new schoolmaster is very popular with his scholars, both here and at Te Bore, but I am sorry to say that the attendauce is not so good here as it should be. We have been gettiugsome very severe frosts lately. — -(Own Correspondent, June 9th.)
