About half-past five this morning a fire broke out in the premises of Thomas Jacobs, linen draper, Colombo- street, near Cathedral Square, and rapidly spread to Baiber's, book-seller's, on the south, and Stewarts fruiterer's on the north •, also, to Glassons, small hairdresser's shop, in C.ithedral Square. There was delay in getting the fire-engines to work, but, as the building was of wood, and old, it could scaicely be saved. The premises were under a lone lease to Frederick Hobbs, the others being his subtenants. The upppr portion of Barber's shop was occupied by the Young Men's Christian Association. No one lived on the premises. Hobbs insurances amount to £1150 in the New Zealand Company. Jacobs' stock is insured for £1600 in the Australian Mercantile Union. He estimates his loss at £200. Barber is insured fBr £300 in the London, Liverpool, and Qlpbo, estimates his loss at JbIOOO. Glassorii^isnred for £80 in the Australian Me&antile Union. He estimates his loss at £100. Stewart, who was uninsured, estimates his loss at £50. Last Night. The following are additional particulars re the fire on Sunday morning. The effects «f tfje Younjj Men's Christian Association, which were completely destroyed, were insured in the Norwich Union office for £180. The library consisted of 500 volumes, and was worth considerably more than the amount of insurance, and the association are heavy losers. In addition to the above a good deal of valuable property belonging to members, and lent fqr $he use qf the asaociatiqn'was, destroyed. Tlje Rev. J. Crpwes had soipe £5Q worth of books and magic lantern burned, nothing of which is insured, while J. M. Heywood and others have lost various articles of value.
