ROAD BOARD ELECTIONS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I have noticed in scvoial of the papois state nents to the effect that the mnual meeting of ratepayeis must take place previous to animal election of tiustecs, and that this necesganly involves the loss of two days. I have read the new act, and fail to see any such pio\is>o Would you kindly give your opinion on the matter? The act says that the annual meeting of rntepxyeis shall be held on some day in the fir&t week in May, and may be adjourned fro n time ti time. Now I notice several annual meetings advertised to take place in the first week in June. Mr fSperry'b telegram postponing the elections does not in any way alltulo to annual meetings, so that the meetings about to be held will be illegal. What say you, sir? Again, I notice that so'ne of the late road boards have not complied with sections 40, 73 and 7G of the Act, consequent'y the now boards for such districts will be sitting illegally. — I am &c.
LoOKiiK-OV. [Nothing in the act of ISS2 says that it is nocessaiy to lioM annual meohngs Yefore the olcct'on of tiusteps, although it is usual to do so. Mr Sperry's tulegiam is notliing to go by, and unless Government legalises the action of those bonds who acted on ib the elections will certainly be illegal. Annual meetings, have, no doubt, bevii pi overly adjourned. Those boards who have not taken proper steps to hold open elections have elected their moinbeis under the " Regulation of Local Elections Act." When only the requisite number of nominations are reoeived to form the board no election at all is necessary. You seem to have forgotten this. — Ed.]
