Te Awamutu Public Hall. ALADDIN.
The pupils of the Te Awamutu school gave an entertainment in the Public Hall on Thursday evening in aid of the funds of the public and the school libraries. There was a very large attendance, over £15 being t.ikcn at the door, exclusive of the money accruing from tickets sold. The performance consisted of the burlesque " Aladdin, or the Wonderful Scamp," and all things considered it was most creditably put on the stage. Mr Bonge, the popular head master of the school, had spared no pains to perfect the arrangements, and in this he was ably seconded by Mr Clough, whose scene painting deserves more than a passing word of notice. Aladdin is a piece which depends to a considerable extent on the scenery and costumes, and in both these respects the efforts of the management were highly successful. It was not to be expected that on so small a stage, and with such limited means, the scenic effects should be perfect, bat they were fully as complete as could have been expected. The following was the cast of characters : — Emperor, Miss Uarley } Vizier, Master G. Berry ; Pekoe, Misa Rcbekah Lewis ; Aladdin, Miss Annie Devin ; Princess, Miis M. Lewis ; Ab.uiazar (the magician) Mr Bengn } Widow Twankcy, Mr E. Hill. The re^t of the characters, mandarins, sprites, imps, &«., were sustained by the school children. It is scarcely fair to single out any particular impersonations for special praise. The young ladies, without exception, performed the task allotted them in really excellent style, while Messrs B j nge and Hill are deserving of all praise. The overtures were payed by Mrs Audrew and Miss Lewis. The appfaii3e which greeted cvt'Bj^cene was the best testimony to the wAj^nf the performance, which was, in fa^^me of the best of the kind we have ever witnessed. A dance followed, and was kept up until an eirl}' hour yc3tenl,iy morning. The music was supplied by Mr Sibley in that gentleman's well known efficient style.
