WAIP A COUNTY COUNCIL.
+ AsrwiVL mooting of the council was held at the chambers on Tuesday, May i'2ntl, to receive the engineer's report on the condition of the mam roads, and to consider ways and means of maintenance. Crs. Lake (chairman,) Germann, Bruce, Teasdalc and Steele were present. The engineer (Mr T. (>. Sanrics) read his report upon fie whole of the main loads. Hook's Bridge.— Cr. Germann proposed, Cr. Steele seconded, " That the engineer prepare plans and specifications and invite tenders for the building of a brick, culvert in lieu of the present structure known as Hook's bridge, tenders to bb in by next meeting,"— Carried, Drainage. — Cr. Steele moved, Cr. Teasdale seconded, " That the eugineer telegraph to the Government, asking whether, in the case of the Newcastle district, they will allow of completion of dtains this year, and gravelling on next years's applications. If consent given, engineer to invite tenders for the drains." — Carried. DAY'h Ob \in*. — The engineer's repoit brought this before the notice of council. The clerk was oulered to w rite to Mr Day, and direct him to remove culvert, and iestore the road to its former condition, he being responsible for any damage done in the meantime. Hkatiujh's Crkuk. — The engineer was authoiiacd to effect some repairs to the approaches. Waipa Bridge. — The council considered tiie probability of Raglan County paying half as very unlikely, and directed the engineer to fix a notice up, and also achertise the bridge closed. The cleik was directed to bring the matter again before the Government. KutlKiHi llovi). — Cr. Steele moved, Cr. Bruce seconded, "That the engineer take steps to keep the road open between Te Awamutu and Kihikihi by fascining the bad places, and opening out of all diains where necessary ; also, to obtain a supply of planks for bridge repairs. '" — Carried. Sandpits. — The clerk was directed to warn peisons from taking gravel from any main road, under penalty of prosecution. Swamp Road. — The engineer was authorised to expend £10 iv temporary repairs. Hamilton Road. — Cr. Steele moved, and Cr. Bruce seconded, " That the engineer invite tenders for constructing a brick culvert near Hammond's farm." — Carried. In view of future applications for loans the engineer was directed to prepare supplementary plans and estimates at once, and to include forming and draining the Ohaupo-Paterangi road in the Tuhikaramea riding. This concluded the works the council could at present undertake, and the meeting broke up.
Mr J. S. Buckland will hold his next regular s.ile of live stock at Ohnupo on Tuesday, June 12th, at 1 p.m., for the sale of all kinds of stock. The wife of a German settler near Myrtle Creek, Wide Bay, Queensland, left her infant, 12 months old, for a short time, and on returning found a pig gnawing the infant's limbs, flesh having been bitten off the arms and feet.
